WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 | 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM
10:15AM - 10:45AM | SIMPLIFYING THE APPROACH TO WILDLIFE FENCING FOR HERPETOFAUNA TO ENSURE EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION: AN ANALYSIS OF GLOBAL MITIGATION CASE STUDIES
TRACK: TERRESTRIAL ANIMAL PASSAGE STRATEGIES SPEAKERS: DEAN SWENSSON, ANIMEX FENCING Wildlife fencing is used as a global mitigation solution for herpetofauna species to prevent roadkill. However, the fence material, height, and implementation requirements vary between country to country, state to state and region to region. Although many government organizations and researchers are working to create fencing guidelines for a variety of species, the materials and installation methods are often vague and in many instances later discovered to be dangerous for the target species. The lack of research and focus into this topic is resulting in many fences being installed and erected that are inadequate, environmentally damaging and ecologically ineffective. This can lead to frustration and resistance from stakeholders who want their investments on large projects to be sustainable and often end up being fined, delayed or paying for repairs. Through collaboration and private-public partnerships we have analyzed a comprehensive range of case studies from across the globe where innovative solutions have been rigorously tested to help solve problems that often hinder the implementation, management and success of wildlife mitigation schemes. Through this analysis we have created a standardized set of fencing specifications and installation recommendations that consider the ecological, practical and climatic challenges faced all over the world. This resource will become a valuable asset and help agencies across the world ensure they can easily implement reliable, cost effective and ecologically sensitive mitigation measures to help reduce global wildlife mortality. 10:45AM - 11:15AM | (RE)CONNECTING WILD: RESTORING SAFE PASSAGE
TRACK: TERRESTRIAL ANIMAL PASSAGE STRATEGIES SPEAKERS: MARTA BROCKI, ARC SOLUTIONS (Re)Connecting Wild tells the remarkable story of the decade-long effort by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and its partners to improve human safety by re-connecting an historic mule deer migration that crosses over both US-93 and I-80 in rural Elko County, NV. The film allows viewers to witness the wildlife crossing structures along I-80 from construction to the restoration of safe passage for migratory mule deer to more than 1.5 million acres of summer and winter habitat. The Pequop Mountains intersect with I-80 approximately 18 miles east of Wells, NV. Over an 8 year period, 165 wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs), primarily with deer, were reported in this area. These reports documented more than 50 incidents resulting in property damage, two rollovers, and 12 human injuries. NDOT has estimated only 20-30% of WVCs are reported in rural areas throughout Nevada, suggesting that 60-80 deer-vehicle collisions occur annually in this region. In 2018, NDOT completed a network of wildlife crossing safety structures, including two wildlife overpasses and approximately 20 miles of exclusionary fencing. These efforts tie into a landscape scale approach to connectivity aimed at reducing deer-vehicle collisions and increasing habitat connectivity by reconnecting a biannual migration of mule deer that crosses both US 93 and I-80 in rural Elko County. High quality educational content has the power to increase the visibility of the issue of WVCs, generate a widespread understanding of solutions for safe passage, and to inspire further action needed to reconnect landscapes. Since its debut at ICOET in 2019, the documentary has been short-listed for more than 10 film festivals and continues to increase awareness of solutions for connecting landscapes. Sharing this film with the NETWC audience will further extend its reach to interested viewers and will provide an opportunity for a Q&A period with representatives involved in the production of the documentary. |
